The Saints are bringing in veteran kicker Nick Novak for a Tuesday tryout, a league source confirmed to the Advocate on Monday night.
Novak, 34, has spent the last four seasons with the San Diego Chargers, making 86.3 percent of his kicks out west, including 22 of 26 last season. Novak’s longest kick in the NFL came from 53 yards in 2011.
The veteran kicker was beaten out in San Diego’s training camp by undrafted Texas A&M rookie Josh Lambo.
Novak’s tryout adds a wrinkle to a kicker race thought to be over. New Orleans cut Dustin Hopkins during the final cutdown to 53 on Saturday and told former Arkansas kicker Zach Hocker he’d won the job outright, a league source told The Advocate last weekend.
Hocker made 4-of-5 field goals in the preseason, belting through kicks of 47, 50 and 53 yards, and his only miss coming from 50 yards in the preseason opener.
