Post – Mortem: Saints vs Rams

Please remember, as I’ve said many times before, I’m a homer. I’ve been a Saints fan for as long as there has been a Saints team in New Orleans. That why I can say that the Saints are at a point in their season where they need to put up or shut up. It was one thing to go up to Seattle and get beat badly a few weeks ago, that could be written off as one of those things that happen when your playing against a top team on the road. But after watching the Saints get beaten in every phase of the game by the Rams today, the Saints need to take a long hard look and decide whether they are contenders or pretenders.

The offense turned the ball over and then when they had a chance to score early, they ended up with field goals being blocked. Instead of holding the Rams offense to field goals then Saints defense gave up plays and allowed the Rams offense to score touchdowns instead. Special teams when they weren’t having field goals blocked fell asleep and allowed the Rams to surprise them with an onside kick in the middle of the game.

Enough of the Rams though, the determining game of the Saints season is next weekend, in Carolinal, on the road. And the Saints don’t have anyone to blame but themselves. They knew coming into the game that they needed a win to stay ahead of Carolina and minimize the importance of next weeks game, but they lost that advantage with their play on the road today.

The simple truth of the matter is that if they don’t win in Carolina next weekend, they will still be in the playoff’s but as a wildcard with no games at the Super Dome. It doesn’t matter if they win in Carolina next weekend by one point, they have to win. First to secure the division and get some home games, but more importantly to get the on the road game onus off of their backs.

I’m sure in the post game wrap up Payton, Brees or some of the other players will try and take responsibility for the loss today. What the Saints had better do is close ranks, and decide to go to Charlotte next week and lay it on the line.
