Week 4: Bergeaux’s List of Things

By Jean-Paul Bergeaux

Things I know.

Pro-Pick’em is hard this year! It looks like any team can beat any other team on Sunday. Even the 0-4 teams have talent and could possibly beat the better teams right now. {OK, maybe the Bills can’t.) The different appears to be heart, coaching, injuries and sometimes luck. The talent level isn’t as different as it has been in the past… except maybe the Bills.

LT is making a difference for the NY Jets. Provided LT can stay healthy, he looks like he has plenty left in the tank for the Jets. LT probably couldn’t have done this well if he had stayed in San Diego. The new scenery seems to be a fountain of youth for him. Look at these yards-per-rush averages in the first four games: 5.6, 6.9, 4.7, 7.0. 341 yards in four games with a season average of 6.1 yards per rush. At that pace, he’ll have 1,364 yards on the season. Even if that falls off to 1,000 yards for the season. At 31 years old, wow.

The SuperBowl participating teams are struggling. The Saints may be 3-1, but they haven’t looked good and are a half game back in the NFC South. Indy is 2-2 and one and half games back in the AFC South division. (No that’s not a typo) They both have plenty of time and talent to right their respective ships, but neither looks like a championship team right now.

Things I think I know.

There are several teams that haven’t figured out who they are yet. Seahawks, Titans, , Giants, Dolphins, Jaguars, and Redskins are just some examples of teams that haven’t decided who they are yet. They win games that are tough and lose games they shouldn’t lose. A lot of football left to figure out which is for real and which will be inconsistent or just bad the rest of the year.

The problem with the Colts is Dungy is gone. The Colts have been making coaching mistakes since Dungy left. There were a few through 2009 that the Colts were able to make it through and still win. They probably would have won the SuperBowl if Dungy had been coaching, as Sean Payton SCHOOLED Caldwell. Then there was last week. Why in the world is Caldwell calling time outs for the Jaguars while they are driving down for the winning field goal?

Love him or hate him you have to give Bill Belchick credit. He’s taking a young Patriots team built from collecting as many draft picks as possible and doing something with them. He doesn’t have nearly the veteran leadership he had on defense, on the O-line or at running back that he has had in the past and still is winning games against tough teams. I mean Ben-Jarvis Green-Ellis (the law firm) and Danny Woodhead as running backs? YOUNG guys on defense who do make mistakes, granted, but they are making plays. If I’m not mistaken there is only one player on defense that was with the Patriots for any of their SuperBowl years. Wilfork.

Things I know I don’t know.

How is this Mike Vick injury going to play out? Kolb didn’t look great replacing Vick, but what if Vick turns out to be really injured, Kolb gets his act together and plays well? Do you stay with Kolb? Or do you go back to Vick? It may all be moot if Vick is ready for next week or Kolb continues to struggle while Vick is out. I think one or the other will happen, and Vick comes back?

Who the heck is going to win the NFC West? And do we care? I honestly think that San Francisco can still win that division. I’m not saying that they will, but if then got their act together and won 9 games, they might still win the division. Only one of those losses was in the division. Seahawks are schizophrenic, Cardinals aren’t that good, and the Rams… Well maybe the Rams will win it? They are on a two game win streak and only a half game back in the division.

Who is the best team in the NFL? No really, it can’t be Kansas City. My computer is making an error showing them undefeated. It’s not the Colts or the Saints. The Packers can’t get out of their own way and were lucky to escape the Lions on Sunday. The Bears shouldn’t have won game 1 and were handed game 3. The Saints and Falcons are not as good as their records indicate. The Jets? The Ravens? The Patriots? What about the Texans? A lot of football left to play to figure it out…
