Saints Interested in a Contract Extension with CB Janoris Jenkins?

The Saints may be interested in working out a contract extension with cornerback Janoris Jenkins according to Rod Walker of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The Saints claimed Jenkins off waivers from the New York Giants in Week 15 after Jenkins made an insensitive post on social media.

He was already on thin ice with the Giants but was still the only bright spot in their miserable secondary. Despite his falling out with the Giants, Jenkins still finished with five interceptions — tied for second most in the league-and played well on limited snaps with the Saints.

Jenkins helped keep Vikings receiver Stephon Diggs in check in Sunday’s 26-20 loss in the wildcard round of the playoffs. Diggs, who Jenkins shadowed in man-to-man coverage, finished with just two catches for 36 yards and was targeted five times.

No longer the shutdown corner he was with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams early in his NFL career and later with the Giants, the 31-year-old Jenkins is still one of the more competent corners in the league.

By claiming him off waivers, the Saints are on the hook for the $11 million Jenkins is owed on the final year of his current contract in 2020. An extension could significantly lower that cap number. If the Saints do decide to keep Jenkins, impending free agent Eli Apple will likely be deemed expendable.
