Saints vs Jets: Key Matchups and More

Okay the bye week is over and the Saints beat the Bills. The Saints are currently in 1st place in the NFC South by 2 games over the Panthers. The Panthers are hosting the Falcons while the Saints are on the road in New York to face the Jets.  For the Saints a win against the Jets will keep the pressure on Carolina to keep up.

The Jets need a win in order to keep pace with New England. So far this year the Jets have been a surprise, most people thought with the season they had last year that and then starting a rookie QB this season would lead to another down year for the Jets. So far it’s been a mixed bag, their defense has played well enough (not counting the Bengals game) to keep the score close enough for the team to win half of their games.

Matchups:

One of the big things to watch in this game is how well the Saints offensive line protects Brees. The Jets are tied for 5th in the league in sacks, not surprising because one of the Ryan boys is coaching that team. This past week the Bills, with Mario Williams leading the way managed to get to Brees several times. It will be interesting to watch and see what adjustments the Saints make against the Jets.

Another area to watch is the running game of the Saints, we’ll go into more detail later in the week but in my mind the running game looked as good as it has all season against the Bills. Pierre Thomas was able to gash the Bills for several runs of 10 or more yards. That’s the good news, the bad news is that the Jets have the best defense against the run in the league at this point only giving up 77.9 yards per game.

Turnovers:

So far this year the Saints have done a great job of limiting turnovers on their part. The offense is tied for 2nd fewest in the league at this point. The Jets on the other hand have turned the ball over 17 times this year which ties for 3rd most in the league. The Saints defense is tied for 9th with 15 takeaways while the Jets are tied for 29th with only 5 takeaways.

Quote of the Week (so far):

“If we don’t play better than we did today, hell, yeah, that guy (Brees) will break every record known to man against us,”
Rex Ryan
