The first month of the season has been good to the Saints. Even with the offense getting off to slow start the Saints have been able to go 4-0. The play of the defense is in no small part a big part of the reason that the Saints are undefeated.
Couple the Saints start with inconsistent play in Carolina, injuries in Atlanta and a soap opera in Tampa and the Saints have a 2 1/2 game lead going into the second month of the season. The Bears and the Patriots are huge tests for the Saints. The Bears always play the Saints tough, especially in Chicago, and New England is a quality team as usual.
The one oddity of week 5 is that all of the teams that are undefeated at this point are playing on the road. I’m not sure if this means anything other than odds are that there won’t be 5 undefeated teams after week 5 is complete.
NFC South Standings
Week 5 Schedule
Saints VS Bears:
Saints are on a roll, this will be their second road game of the season and a win keeps the pressure on the rest of the NFC South to keep pace and not let the Saints run away with the division. The Bears are tied for first with the Lions and desperately need this win to keep pace with the Lions.
Panthers VS Cardinals:
This will be a big test for the Panthers coming off of their bye week. The 36 points that they have given up for the season were in their two losses, they shut out the Giants in their only win so far. The Cardinals have been playing well of late and should be glad to be back at home.
Jets VS Falcons:
This is an interesting matchup. The Falcons struggles so far this year have been well documented, they need this win to get back on track, at this point it’s going to be hard to even make the playoffs. Another loss might close the door on that possibility. The Jets don’t seem to have enough offense to make this game competitive but their defense will bring the pressure.
Bye – Buccaneers:
With Josh Freeman circus, the bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for the Bucs. I don’t think anyone expected them to be 0-4 to start the season. It will be interesting to see if the team implodes or bands together for the rest of the year. The coaches job might hang in the balance.
