Late Thursday the Saints announced they have canned both defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo as well as fired special teams coordinator Ken Flajole.
“I personally want to thank Steve and Ken for their contributions during what was an unprecedented 2012 season,” coach Sean Payton said. “Philosophically we are changing our defense to a 3-4 alignment and right now is the best time to accomplish this transition.”
Let’s face it, the Saints D was awful in 2012, they ranked last in the NFL in total defense and run defense, yielding the most yards (7,042) ever in a single season.
Payton said today that he’s got no one specific in mind for the D-coordinator job, but there’s a couple names to keep in mind:
Romeo Crennel – recently fired Chiefs coach
Lovie Smith – recently fired Bears coach
Eric Mangini – former Jets and Browns coach, did TV in 2012.
Bottom line is this defense needs a LOT of work, and whoever Payton brings in, he’d better get things turned around.
