The Saints Re-Writing History

The New Orleans Saints are a team just three seasons removed from a Super Bowl victory that shocked the entire nation.  The Saint’s immediately became America’s team and quite honestly how could they not?  The way the entire city of New Orleans literally picked itself up by their bootstraps was truly exemplary of the attitudes of all Americans.

Though the Saints lost in last year’s NFC Divisional game to the San Francisco 49ers 36-32, the Saints look to improve on what already was a very successful season.  Free agent signing Darren Sproles proved to be a solid acquisition, leading the team in rushing last year but proving to be most efficient as an all-purpose back running for 603 yards and two touchdowns while catching 86 passes for 710 yards and seven touchdowns.  Furthermore the real emerging star from last year’s Saints’ is undoubtedly Tight End Jimmy Graham.

If it were not for the record-breaking year the Patriots tight end Rob Grownkowski had, Jimmy Graham would be unquestionably the best pass-catching tight end in the NFL.  In just his second full season, Graham had a remarkable 99 receptions for over 1300 yards and eleven touchdowns.  What was even more impressive was the way in which Graham accomplished these feats; devastating linebackers with his speed and even lining up as a wide receiver on goal line offense to catch jump balls over the much smaller cornerbacks.  Graham was a former basketball player turned football pro, not unlike the Chargers Antonio Gates and the Bears Julius Peppers; great company for the second year pro to be in.

However the biggest story from last year was the play of All-pro Quarterback Drew Brees.  Brees threw for an NFL record 5,476 yards, shattering Dan Marino’s previous record of 5,084 yards which had been intact for over 25 years, completing 71.2% of his passes and throwing an outstanding 46 touchdowns.  Drew Brees has continued to blow away NFL fans that have already seen an innumerable amount of phenomenal plays from this great quarterback.  He is one of the most respected and simultaneously feared players to ever play his position and above all is a great human being who has done more for the city of New Orleans off the field than he could ever do on it.

The predominant story line for the Saints this year will be how to become the first team in Super Bowl History to play football’s most important game under their own roof.  The 2013 Super Bowl will be once again held in the Mercedes Benz Superdome.  Never since the creation of the mutual site Super Bowl game has a home team of that city been represented in the Super Bowl; but don’t tell Drew Brees that.  Even after the single greatest season a player at his position could experience, Brees is still hungry; and don’t be surprised if he is the first quarterback ever to lead his team into their own stadium for a chance to win the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy in the 2013 Super Bowl.
