Tempting Thought – But Parcells Not the Answer for the Saints

The talk of the NFL Monday had a lot to do with Sean Payton arriving at the NFL Owners Meetings, and also about the possible next guy that could lead the Saints while he sits out a season.

Bill Parcells.

Yes, the “Tuna’s” name has popped up, as it was reported that Payton, while seeking the counsel of his former boss and mentor, broached the idea of Parcells becoming the interim head coach.

The story goes that Payton and Parcells have spoken numerous times since NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced last week that the Saints coach would be forced to sit out the 2012 season due to his role in “Bounty Gate.”

Payton is contemplating an appeal of his one-year sentence, but make no mistake, he won’t be coaching in New Orleans in 2012 – appeal or not.

Payton’s agent said Monday “no decisions have been made about an appeal.” Donald Yee said Payton “fully supports the league’s player safety goals.”

While Payton is thinking about what he’ll do with his year off (my money is on as a TV talking head with FOX), the team needs to move forward, not backward, and that’s exactly what they would be doing if Parcells came in on his white horse and tried to run the show.

“Sean Payton and I know each other well, and he has sought my counsel about his situation with the Saints. He has told me a little bit about the team, about the situation they’re in, and about the players. But that is it,” Parcells told on Monday.

And that should be it. Parcells is best now as a guy on the outside looking in, and if Saints fans think that he’s going to ride in from the sunset he’s currently on and lead this team – think again.

His time is past, he’s served the game well, and he should be nowhere near the Saints sideline in 2012.

The Saints would be best served with staying the course with offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. as their new head man while Payton serves his sentence. He knows the team inside and out, and would best be served as the man to try and lead the team with Payton watching.

Bringing Parcells in would only disrupt things, and while the team suffers without Payton, that’s not the course the Saints need while they pay for the sins of the past.

Appeal and stay with the Ship. It will sink without unless Coach Payton keeps the Saints from doing so…
