Brees Just “Very Good” said Saints GM

Sometimes contract talks get ugly. Drew Brees is not new to this. Going into the 2001 NFL draft talk was that Brees could be the top overall pick. But the San Diego Chargers traded that pick to the Atlanta Falcons. Who took Michael Vick. Brees became the top pick of the 2nd round. After some tense talks with the Chargers the two parties finally agreed to a contract. But after three bad years the Chargers drafted Phillip Rivers to replace Brees as the starter. But Rivers holds out for money and Brees wins the job as the starting quarterback.

It’s now the end of the 2005 season. Brees wants a new contract to stay with the Chargers. Brees is at the end of his rookie contract.  But Rivers wants his chance to play. In the last game of the year Brees blows out his shoulder. Ending Brees shot to stay with the Chargers.

Going into the 2006 offseason Brees was coming off a good year. But lack of arm strength and blowing out his throwing shoulder had team questioning him. Two teams had interest in the free agent Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. Brees was using the Saints to get more money from the Dolphins. But the Dolphins and Brees were one year and ten million dollars apart. Money the Saints were willing to give Brees. Needing a face of the franchise and the region after hurricane Katrina the Saints were willing to gamble.

Since going to New Orleans in 2006 Brees had to prove he was worth the money and that he was better than Rivers.  Since the 2006 season you could argue that Brees has been the best quarterback in the NFL.  Brees led the Saints to a Super Bowl, NFL MVP award, and the heart of region when they need something to believe in.  There has been little Brees has failed to do since 2006. But his contract is up.

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis has called Brees simply “very good” at this year’s scouting combine. Explaining to sources why contract talks with Brees where taking so long. It seems like Saints owner Tom Benson may have to intervene. The sides are around five million dollars apart. But the Saints can franchise tag Brees to keep him in town. But I’m sure the Saints would rather lock Brees up with a long term deal.

In the end Drew Brees is again in an ugly contract dispute. I’m on the side that the Saints should just pay him. No other quarterback would have done what Brees has in the big easy. This franchise was a joke before he showed up. He has made people forget that.  But hurt feeling can lead people to do bad things. In this case Brees leaving New Orleans. But to call a great quarterback very good to try to make a point is really bad business.

I wonder if Drew will accept the offer or just try to get through the franchise tag? We all know every team in the league will be out to injure him now that Goodall let the Williams sour grape story go viral.
