DE Will Smith Suspended for First Two Games of 2011

The National Football League has suspended Saints defensive end Will Smith for the first two games of the 2011 regular season.

Additionally, Smith will be fined two game checks.

Smith’s suspension stems from his positive test for StarCaps, a banned diuretic, during the 2008 season. Smith, former teammate Charles Grant, and Minnesota Vikings defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams, were initially suspended for four games, but the Williams’ challenged the suspensions in Minnesota court, prompting the NFL to not enforce the suspensions until that legal process concluded earlier this year.

Smith’s suspension will keep him out of next Thursday night’s season-opener against the Green Bay Packers and the Saints’ home-opener against the St. Louis Rams. The subsequent docking of two game checks will cost Smith $1.411 million of his $6 million base salary.
