Veteran defensive end Alex Brown announced on Twitter that he had been released by the Saints.
“It saddens me to say that I have been released from the Saints because their [sic] a first class organization,” Brown wrote.
After being released by the Chicago Bears April, Brown signed a two-year, $5.75 million contract with the Saints. Brown started 16 games for the Saints last season, totaling 39 tackles and a pair of quarterback sacks, the lowest total of his nine-year career.
Brown was due $3 million in base salary this season.
In addition to Brown, the Saints have placed rookie wide receivers John Chiles and Jarred Fayson and safety DeAndre McDaniel on waivers.
