A New Center Could Show Up in New Orleans in 2011

Dan Parr at Pro Football Weekly says that free agency could result in a center change for the Saints coming into the 2011 season.

The Saints might not have much salary-cap flexibility whenever free agency begins — ESPN reported the club has $104.8 million committed for a potential $120 million cap, although the money committed will go down when Reggie Bush is released or has his contract restructured.

One place the team could look to limit costs is at center. Sources say the team would like to re-sign C Jonathan Goodwin, but the Saints drafted Matt Tennant in the fifth round in 2010 with the hope that he eventually would take over as the starting center. If a club makes a strong push to land Goodwin, who made the Pro Bowl after the 2009 season, it’s unlikely New Orleans will try to outbid that team.

It will be a tough situation for Tennant, considering the lockout has wiped out OTAs and minicamps, and the Saints would rather give him more time to develop, but he could get a chance to win the starting job when training camp opens.
