About 3,400 New Seats Being Added to the Lower Bowl of the SuperDome

At the conclusion of the 2010 regular season, workers began $85 million in renovations to the 36-year-old Superdome as part of a 15-year lease extension between the Saints and the state of Louisiana.

SMG regional vice president Doug Thornton gave Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune a tour of the progress the project has made in five months.

In addition to changes to the concourses, additional restrooms, concessions, and luxury suites, the project expanded the capacity of the lower bowl by nearly 3,500 seats.

“We’re adding 3,400 net new seats to the lower bowl,” Thornton said. “This seating section that you’re looking at right here on the west side is going to be about 12 feet closer to the field than it was prior. And the reason is it was in a semi-circular configuration before. Now it’s in a rectangular geometric shape. So we’ve changed the whole geometry of the lower bowl, and by doing so, we’ve engineered 3,400 net new seats.”
