Saints Running Game Takes Another Huge Blow: Thomas Placed On IR

It was announced earlier today that Pierre Thomas has been place on IR.  This comes on the heels of the Saints’ leading rusher, Chris Ivory being placed on IR Tuesday.  With the season-ending injuries to Thomas and Ivory, the Saints’ running game has taken a devastating blow.  Mike Triplett of the Times Picayune has reported that Joique Bell, a rookie from Philadelphia’s practice squad, has been signed to replace Thomas on the roster.

More than anything, this hit to the run game has me very concerned.  I’ve always been an advocate of maintaining balance as opposed to having Drew Brees dropping back to throw all game long.  There are some serious deficiencies on the Saints’ offensive line that Brees has managed to mask pretty well with his athleticism.  Even then, he’s taken a lot of sacks this season and has been under a lot of pressure which,  in my mind has affected his ability to make better decisions with his throws.  All in all, the Saints do not perform well when they become one-dimensional.  I just wonder why the team has not considered Willie Parker as a suitable replacement for one of these backs.  It seems that something should be able to get hammered out for at least this playoff game.  Without a respectable running game, the Saints have a daunting, uphill task ahead.

There is some good news, however.  Triplett reports that Marques Colston was able to participate fully in today’s practice and TEs Jeremy Shockey and David Thomas practiced in a limited capacity.  Let’s hope that Graham can get up to speed as well.
