Player Spotlight Week 1: #51 Jonathan Vilma

When talking about the Saints defensive player of week 1, nobody can deny that MLB Jonathan Vilma’s name should definitely be in the conversation. Not surprisingly, Vilma is already off to a great start for the 2010 regular season, having recorded four tackles and an interception of Brett Favre in the season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Due to a groin injury suffered in the preseason, it was an uncertainty whether or not Vilma would even be able to play in the season opener.  But to the delight of Saints fans everywhere (and to the dismay of the Vikings, I’m sure), #51 was on the field and ready to take care of business.  And it was a good thing he was.  He certainly made his presence known all over the field as he brought down Vikings runners and receivers almost effortlessly and pointed to his teammates to help get them into position.  Needless to say, his on-the-field intelligence, his productivity, and his leadership are virtually irreplaceable.  When it comes down to it, he is as valuable an asset to the Saints as any.

He’s valuable to Saints fans as well.  Very popular in the social media Facebook and Twitter, Vilma is perhaps one of the most gracious stars that I’ve ever seen.  He actually takes time to interact with his fans, often commenting to or about them one by one.  To some it might seem trivial, but to adoring fans, such a gesture means the world.  By giving so much of himself in order to acknowledge his fans, he shows what it really means to appreciate people.  Not only is he a great player, but he is also a great person.

Congratulations to Jonathan Vilma for having such a great game in week 1.  No doubt, it won’t be the last.
