2010 NFL Gridiron Gab Mock Draft: #25 Baltimore

Baltimore once again returned to the playoffs under QB Joe Flacco, this time losing in the second round to the Indianapolis Colts. The defense found its swagger once again and is looking to retool with young talent an aging defense.

And with the 25th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select..

DE Carlos Dunlap, Florida

Matt Jergensen of RavensGab likes the idea of his pick wearing the black and purple

The Ravens have needed to boost the pass rush for three years now and “Baby Feak” possess tremendous physical tools. The nebulous “Character Issues” label has forced Dunlap to fall and his maturity has been questioned as well among scouts. However, Dunlap couldn’t fall into a better situation to live up to his potential than Baltimore. They are a solid team that has made the playoffs 3 of the last 4 seasons and looks to contend again in 2010. He’ll receive the push he needs from veterans, Kelly Gregg, Trevor Pryce and of course Ray Lewis to learn how to be a professional.

While no doubt that Carlos Dunlap is first round talent, several character issues have plauged him recently. NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock addresses those issues..

It’s a lot more about his body of work on his tape (than his DUI arrest the Tuesday before the SEC Championship Game). In my opinion, he’s got a substantially below average motor. He only plays a certain percentage of plays hard. When you’re doing that, you’re going to get dinged pretty badly by the NFL. Carlos Dunlap is a beautiful body with a tremendous physical skill set, but he doesn’t play every play hard. I think he’s going to fall midway to late in the second round, and maybe to the third. He’s definitely got ability, but how much money do you want to pay a guy who doesn’t play hard every play?

Dunlap, however, is ready to put the past behind him and eager to get going in the NFL. Recently, he told the Gainesville Sun..

I want to keep it confidential, but I’ve met with about 18 teams. It varies from wherever you get your source from, but everybody is saying I should definitely be in the first round. But the draft is always unpredictable, so you never know until draft day. I’m ready to find out where I’m going to have to start over at. I’m anxious to get going. We’ve been off the field for so long. I’m ready to get back on the field.
