2010 NFL Gridiron Gab Mock Draft: #7 Cleveland

I think the draft has settled a bit and pretty soon we should see a lot of teams drafting for specific needs now that the top players are off the clock.

And with the seventh pick of the draft, the Cleveland Browns select

S Earl Thomas, Texas

Randy Ward of BrownsGab offers his reasons for selecting Thomas so early

With the Seventh pick in the 2010 Draft the Cleveland Browns select Earl Thomas. Thomas most people believe could be the Playmaker on the Defense the Browns haven’t had since Eric Turner. Thomas a ballhawk on the field and also excellent awareness could make this defense better instantly

I am a fan of Earl Thomas myself, being a Longhorn fan and geting a chance to see him develop over the last couple of seasons. He was perhaps the most talented, but still raw, starter in the secondary for a very young and shaky Texas secondary, which started two freshman corners on its way to a one loss season. Thomas, as a sophomore and elder statesman, settled the young group down and emerged s its leader.

Many draft boards like Eric Berry’s skills, but feel Thomas will develop into a better prospect due to his uncanny ability in run support.

7. Cleveland Browns- S Earl Thomas, Texas
6. Seattle Seahawks- DT Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma
5. Kansas City Chiefs- S Eric Berry, Tennessee
4. Washington Redskins- OT Trent Williams, Oklahoma
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – DT Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska
2. Detroit Lions- OT Russell Okung, Oklahoma State
1. St. Louis Rams – QB Sam Bradford, Oklahoma

On the clock…the Oakland Raiders.
