2010 NFL Gridiron Gab Mock Draft: #17 San Francisco

San Francisco added CB Joe Haden with the 13th pick to shore up a glaring need in their defensive secondary. Where will the Niners go this time around?

And with the 17th pick in the 2010 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers select..

S Taylor Mays, USC

One scout’s assessment of Taylor Mays..

USC’s Taylor Mays probably would have been the first safety selected in last year’s draft but he chose to return for his senior season and that opened up his game to excessive scrutiny. The most common criticism is that Mays doesn’t make enough big plays in coverage (i.e. interceptions) but it’s important to keep in mind that he’s more of a big hitter than a playmaker. Is Bob Sanders any less of a great player than Ed Reed because he only has six career picks? Of course not, they’re just different types of players. A great athlete with an amazing blend of size (6-3, 230) and speed (4.2), Mays epitomizes the phrase “Hits Like a Linebacker, Runs Like a Cornerback”.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper assess Taylor Mays as well and how a change in location would be good for the young safety..

Mays is… the best size-speed combination in the draft, and a player who could benefit from a new system after playing a deep center field for the Trojans last year. He also has great character and the smarts to develop his game. The physicality is there, and Mays can be better.
