2010 NFL Gridiron Gab Mock Draft #10 Jacksonville

Next on the draft board is the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that’s in flux right now. With season tickets and overall ticket sales down due to the economy, blackouts of home games have become the norm. On the field however, the team almost made it to the playoffs out of the tough AFC South. Let’s see if they can pick up another piece to put them over the top.

And with the tenth pick of the 2010 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select,

DE Derrick Morgan, Georgia Tech

A very solid pick indeed. The Jags need help on defense, especially when you play Peyton Manning, RB Chris Johnson of the Titans, and that dangerous Texans offense twice a year.

Scott Wright of DraftCountdown.com offers his assesment of this pick and what else the Jags could do in the draft

The Jags registered a league-low 14 sacks in 2009 so even though they recently signed Aaron Kampman as a free agent they could still use another pass rusher. Georgia Tech’s Derrick Morgan isn’t an elite edge rusher but he is a terrific all-around player with prototypical size who is effective against both the run and the pass. Morgan may not offer much in the way of star potential or ever be mentioned in the same breath as the leagues premier sack artists but he would be a terrific complement to Kampman. South Florida’s Jason Pierre-Paul might be an option as well but Morgan seems to be a better fit because General Manager Gene Smith places a major emphasis on character. Jacksonville could also use an upgrade at safety so if by some chance Tennessee’s Eric Berry fell this far that would be a slam dunk and they could even consider reaching for Earl Thomas of Texas. The Jags have also shown considerable interest in Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen and Clemson’s C.J. Spiller and if they went in either of those directions it would certainly qualify as an interesting choice. As always keep an eye on Florida’s Tim Tebow too. This franchise desperately needs to reinvigorate their fan base and Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver has even publically expressed his interest in the local superstar on more than one occasion.

And the beat goes on. The draft so far…
