Saints Add DE Wilkerson

The Saints continued to add depth along the defensive line, an area of concern going into the preseason. That is no longer the case as the Saints continue to stockpile depth along the line.

Former Tampa Bay DE Jimmy Wilkerson signed a one year, $2 million contract today to add to what has been a pretty impressive haul for the Saints in recent days. Wilkerson recorded 46 tackles, 6 sacks, and forced 2 fumbles for a very underwhelming defense. He is recovering from an ACL injury suffered late last season.

Coupled with the recent signing of DE Alex Brown, the Saints now seem pretty set at DE. The Wilkerson signing also allows Anthony Hargrove to focus more on playing DT instead of having to play both D-line positions.

The Wilkerson signing will also probably affect what the Saints do in the first round of the draft. With DE not much of a concern, the Saints are less likely to take a DE with their first pick in Thursday’s draft. However, the Saints will likely look at a DE in later rounds to add more depth to a DE corps mostly in their 30’s.
