2010 NFL Schedule To Be Released Tuesday

The NFL decided to postpone announcing the 2010 NFL season schedule until this week. The tension mounts, especially for the Saints, who, as the Super Bowl champs, will kickoff the 2010 NFL season on prime time national television. Their opponent is yet to be determined. But here is what we do know…

Break Down of 2010 Saints Opponents

NFC South (Home and Away)
– 6 games
Atlanta Falcons
Carolina Panthers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFC Division Winners – 3 Games
Dallas Cowboys
Minnesota Vikings
Arizona Cardinals

NFC West
– 3 Games
Seattle Seahawks
San Francisco 49ers
St. Louis Rams
(plus division winner Arizona)

AFC North – 4 Games
Pittsburgh Steelers
Cleveland Browns
Baltimore Ravens
Cincinnati Bengals

As you can see, the Saints have a much harder road to travel, thanks to the league scheduling rules, which determine what teams will play where based on the previous seasons division standings. Thus the Saints have to play teams which finished in a similar spot in their respective divisions.

We also know which teams the Saints play where.

Home
Atlanta, Carolina, Tampa, Minnesota,St. Louis, Seattle, Cleveland, Pittsburgh

Away
Atlanta, Carolina, Tampa, Arizona, Dallas, San Francisco, Baltimore, Cincinnati

Expect the second half of the schedule to be heavy with divisional games as well. The NFL is trying to guard against teams resting their players towards the end of the season if they have nothing to play for.

The NFL regular season kicks off Thursday Sept. 9th at the Superdome. The Saints don’t know who they will play, but it is likely Atlanta, Minnesota, or Pittsburgh.
